Who am I in relation to God? (Part 4)—God is independent; I am dependent.

When we speak of relationship with God, we are talking about a spiritual relationship. We did an entire category entitled, “Who Is God?”. In that series, we looked at many distinct attributes that define God’s character. Our relationship with God is unique because of His character, but also because He is Spirit.

God doesn’t need anything from us and He knows all about us—our thoughts, desires, and motivations.

Acts 17:24-25
The God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands; 25 nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things

Scripture tells us “God looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7), “knows the secrets of the heart” (Psalm 44:21), and “the excuses of the heart” (Luke 16:15).

We relate to God from our place of dependence on Him. We are never in a position of equality with or authority over God.

Proverbs 19:21
Many plans are in a man’s heart, but the counsel of the Lord will stand.
Romans 12:3
For through the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think more highly of himself than he ought to think; but to think so as to have sound judgment, as God has allotted to each a measure of faith.

David Jeremiah states our relationship with God distinctly.

“I’m dependent on God for my next breath. It is dishonest of me to pretend that I’m anything but a man—small, weak, and limited. So, living independent of God is self-delusion.” (What to Do When You Don’t Know What to Do. P. 224)

It is our place of privilege to live dependent on God.

Isaiah 40:31
Yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength;
They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired,
They will walk and not become weary.
