How do I respond to God? (Part 1)—From the heart

SABERS introduces the revolutionary cycle of responding to God instead of reacting to circumstances.

Psychology Today posted an interesting blog about the difference between reaction and response.

“A reaction is instant. When you say or do something “without thinking,” that’s the unconscious mind running the show. A reaction is based in the moment and doesn’t take into consideration long term effects of what you do or say. It might turn out okay but often a reaction is something you regret later.”

“A response on the other hand usually comes more slowly. It’s based on information from both the conscious mind and unconscious mind. A response takes into consideration the well-being of not only you but those around you. It weighs the long term effects and stays in line with your core values.”

Experience demonstrates that very few people embrace revolutionary change until the pain of sameness is greater than the pain of change. Sadly, pain seems to be the real motivator for change.

As with any true and permanent change, the process must begin at a core level deep within us—our motivations, intentions and desires-the heart. In God’s wisdom, He gives us a guide that reveals our heart, the place where our motivations, intentions and desires sprout.

Hebrews 4:12
For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

The Bible, God’s truth to us, changes us from the inside.

And God invites us into relationship as He knows us and leads us in His way.

Psalm 139:23-24
Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; 24 And see if there be any hurtful way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way.

God works in our heart through relationship with Him to bring about this radical change.

1 Thessalonians 5:24
Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.
Philippians 1:6
For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus
